PFAS Definition
▪ PFAS Class (= Family)
• Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances
• Different existing definitions, most dominant one
currently is OECD definition:
• Fluorinated substances that contain at least one fully
fluorinated carbon atom
• Estimated over 10,000 substances falling into this scope
• Out of those around 5,000 substances globally marketed
▪ Famous representatives (= Family members) from the
PFAS class
• PFOA: Perfluorooctanoic Acid (non-polymeric)
• PFOS: Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid (non-polymeric)
• PTFE: Polytetrafluoroethylene (polymeric)

PFAS Characteristics
▪ Unique properties
• Water and oil - repellent
• Resistance to many external factors like pH,
temperature or oxidation (non-flammable)
▪ Carbon Fluorine (C-F) bond is one of the strongest
in organic chemistry
• Resist degradation under normal environmental
conditions
• Accumulates in environment and food chain

PFAS Applications – General
▪ Applications related to PFAS’ water & grease resistance
• Paper or other natural fiber-based food packaging
• Non-stick coated cookware
• Textiles
• Fabric and Shoe Treatments
• Ski Wax
• Metal protective coating
▪ Others
• Cosmetics
• F-gases
• Firefighting Foam
• Pesticides
